Studio Art Instructor
Teaching Philosophy
As an instructor I encourage students to take risk and explore various techniques, materials, resources and to use assignments as a catalyst for thinking and learning. I want to create opportunities which broaden the way my students think about art: a re-examination of their surroundings effected by examples from the vast historical canon of artistic works, and critical examination of current art and cultural issues. I want students to make the most of their education. I acknowledge the artistic potential each student possesses. I hope to facilitate wisdom, critical thinking, and foster students abilities to access contemporary historic and theoretical dialogue. The ability to think critically about issues, articulate ideas, and be open to visual, written and oral expression is a crucial skill I want my students to learn. Students should consider art as a means of communication and focus on the ability of engaged art as a catalyst to alter the viewer's perceptions. I want to foster a sense of pride in my students so they can appreciate the value of what they are creating while also remaining humble and open to new ideas and experiences. By placing value on the large range of diverse individual expressions students will also be able to respect the work of others.
I have had the opportunity to work with students of various ages and ability levels. These experiences have given me insight with how to adapt and approach student assistance which is necessary for their education.
